An Exploration In Packaging

The Project

This project is all about integrating the packaging of a toy to be a part of the toy itself. Rather than the box being discarded as waste upon opening, it becomes an integral part of the play experience. This approach not only reduces immediate waste but also enhances the entertainment value for the purchaser. The box can also be refolded into its original form to conveniently store the customized toy for future play. Due to its cuboid shape when folded up, it is easy to store in any environment and can be stacked. 

By incorporating the packaging into the Littlest Pet Shop toy, this project aims to tap into the creativity of the buyer, allowing for customization options that empower individuals to personalize their play experience. Whether it’s decorating the packaging with the stickers or incorporating the converted box room into imaginative storytelling, the possibilities for creative expression are endless.

Additionally, by showcasing how the box can be a part of play, it encourages children to repurpose materials for more toys. This product fosters the idea that kids can craft their own play experiences beyond traditional plastic toys.

The design problem at hand encompasses two primary aspects:

  1. Minimize the environmental impact caused by discarded toy product packaging

  2. Foster a culture in which children are actively encouraged to engage in creative play and modify their toys according to their imagination and preferences

The objectives of this product are to eliminate waste and to enhance the creativity of the buyer. By integrating packaging into the play experience itself, this product aims to challenge product disposal and passive consumption. A successful project will empower buyers to engage in imaginative and personalized play experiences.

The primary audience for this product includes children ages 4 and up. LPS Create! is designed to be safe and appealing to all genders with a focus on personalized, imaginative play. While mainly for young fans of customizable play, the toy also resonates with creative-minded individuals, including young adults revisiting childhood memories, thanks to the brand's resurgence.

Included in the package are:

  1. The convertible box

  2. An animal figurine (a cat for this initial design)

  3. A piece of cardboard that is perforated to transform into a bed and nightstand

  4. A sticker sheet that can be used to decorate the box

There will also be a wrap design around the box that features construction instructions on the inside.
